Best OT Appointment Ever!!!
Thursday when Maggie came to do occupational therapy Carter was ready to impress. He was walking backwards while she held his hands on front of him. He was wearing his prosthetic arm so he was very symetrical and his foot placement was right on track, it just wanted to go BACKWARDS. The look on his face was priceless. He was so impressed with himself as was Maggie and I.
Maggie pulled out the tilt board. She uses this to do weight bearing exercises. The song that she sings with this is "Row Row Row Your Boat". Maggie likes to sing and Carter loves to dance. They mesh so well. Carter has started standing unsupported then bending at the knee to lower himself to the floor. Bending at the knee is so important in his growth with the prothetic leg. We started working on this about 2 weeks ago when Lynn came to our PT appointment. Lynn is his physical therapist from Easter Seals that works with Maggie and Carter once a month.
Today was such a great day for OT and Chase was so super with the session today. Maggie also works with Chase in so many ways. She works on his listening skills. Every week she brings a bag of toys, books, ot aides, puzzles....and so forth....he is to ask to go in the bag for a toy and when he is done with the toy he is to put it back and ask to take another one out. He has been working hard for a couple of weeks and this week he did it all without us pushing him. We asked him once and he listened. She also works on his relationship with his brother and involving him in Carter's routine sessions. He also learns or at least we tell him about 100 times....is to not take his brothers toys out of his hands all the time. This is not yet mastered, LOL.

Holy cow! That is so awesome! Carter has so much determination and drive that it amazes me. He will not give up until he can walk, talk and lead a typical life. I am so proud of him, Kelli, Mike and Chase for all your hard work. Let Carter teach you to never give up without a fight.
It's great how much you can learn from a great OT who has the 'chemistry' someone who sees your child as a part of a whole family and can appreciate the whole dynamic - who needs paper qualifications! What a gem.
cheers
